Cuban Picadillo

This recipe is a family favorite, and an easy one-pan meat and potatoes meal. Try different things with the olives and raisins - my mother never used either, but using one or both adds a whole new dimension of flavor for when you want to mix it up.

You'll need:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1/2 inch pieces
  • 1 small green bell pepper, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp oregano
  • 1 - 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 c chopped green olives (optional)
  • 1/4 c raisins (optional)

Put a large saucepan over medium-high heat, and add the ground beef. When the beef starts sizzling, add the onion and potato and cook, breaking up the meat periodically, until the beef is completely browned. (Click here for a detailed tutorial on browning meat.) Drain well and return to heat.

Add the bell pepper, garlic, seasonings, and tomato sauce, and stir. Add 2 to 3 cups water, until the potatoes are covered, and bring to a boil. Lower temperature to low, cover, and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 25 to 30 minutes. As soon as the potatoes are cooked, uncover and raise the heat to medium to reduce the sauce. Add about 1 1/2 tsp salt, to taste. Toss in the green olives and raisins, if using, at this point. Let simmer about 5 more minutes.

Serve over white rice.
